Reality Check on Ballot Issue #2B

Boulder’s anti-fluoridationists have proposed to fool you into stopping Boulder’s fluoridation program by claiming that it is “medicating” you and is poisoning your water with heavy metals. We refute their sneaky proposal point-by-point:

• Very deceptive proposed ordinance — The “Drinking Water Standards” proposal pretends to do one thing, but actually does something entirely different.
• More deceptive ballot language — The language of the ballot question (Issue #2B) is an attempt to further mislead voters who have not actually read the proposed ordinance.

Too Risky?

The only known (and very small) risk with fluoridation is that a child might get stains on developing teeth such as are shown in this photograph:

(Can’t see the stains? That’s because it often takes a trained eye to notice them. By the way, the stains are often white, and teeth are actually stronger where the stains are! Adolescents and adults can’t get dental fluorosis.)

Without fluoridation, there is a significant risk of experiencing much more dental decay, often severe, such as that seen in this photograph:

(Along with the increase in pain, suffering, and general ill health caused by tooth decay. Unlike their parents and grandparents, many children growing up in fluoridated communities avoid this altogether!)

Which one would you rather risk?

“Don’t Let the Poisonmongers Scare You&rdquo — Consumer advocates expose the anti-fluoridationist tricks of the trade.

The facts on “dental fluorosis” — the only known (and infrequent) side-effect of fluoridation. (Effects only children, not adolescents or adults.)

“Abuse of the Scientific Literature in an Antifluoridation Pamphlet” — It took a 200-page book to fully expose all the bogus stuff found in one 8-page anti-fluoridationist pamphlet!

“Opposition to Community Water Fluoridation and Connections to the ‘Alternative Medicine’ Movement” — Where do they come up with all those crazy ideas about fluoridation? Maybe it reflects how well they understand how the world works.

Be a critical voter! It’s important to know that threatening or alarming statements made by opponents of fluoride are not accepted scientific knowledge. Some things to consider when listening to an opponent, or reading an opponent paper. (Sound advice from some smart people over in Utah.)
