Data from generally accepted scientific studies continue to confirm that fluoridation has substantial lifelong decay preventive effects and is a highly cost-effective means of preventing tooth decay in the United States, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Findings of a case study published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggest that Medicaid-eligible children in communities without fluoridated water were three times more likely than Medicaid-eligible children in communities with fluoridated water to receive dental treatment in a hospital operating room, and the cost of dental treatment per eligible child was approximately twice as high.

The City of Boulder has determined the cost of water fluoridation in Fort Collins is 39¢ per person per year.
The average Boulder resident can expect to have 0.44 fewer cavities each year because of fluoridation. That translates to a savings of $75.17 per person per year.
Since the health risks of water fluoridation are negligible (see our Safety Page), increased health costs are negligible.
A study conducted in 1996 by the CDC found that water fluoridation saves taxpayers $53.10 (adjusted for inflation) per year for every child served by Medicaid.
From the above, the community of Boulder saves an aggegrate of $8 million dollars A YEAR because of water fluoridation, just in the cost of dental care.
Good dental health contributes significantly to the quality of life. The quality of life in Fort Collins is partly responsible for our city’s economic robustness, even in “challenging” times. Losing fluoridation would lead to a decrease in Boulder’s quality of life and undermine its economic health. Our community’s indirect economic losses could be enormous.
