In 2001-3, the City of Fort Collins commissioned a Fluoride Technical Study Group to get the facts on fluoridation. The bottom-line findings: fluoridation is inexpensive, safe, and effective.

In 1999, the American Dental Association published a highly documented Fluoride Facts on fluoridation. It is a detailed and reliable presentation of the facts.

In 2004, the British Fluoridation Society, the UK Public Health Association, the British Dental Association, and the Faculty of Public Health put out a second edition of their highly respected One in a Million fact book on fluoridation. (Yes, regardless of what the other side says, they fluoridate in Europe!)

In 1991, a high-powered scientific subcommittee of the US Public Health Service did a detailed study on the risks and benefits of water fluoridation. Bottom line: low risk and high benefits. The study has remained unrefuted for the 14 years since.

In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a review of water fluoridation that confirmed it is safe, effective and inexpensive, benefitting people in all age groups and circumstances.

Safe! more
A report prepared for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirms that the currently allowed fluoride level in drinking water [4 times the level in Boulder’s water] poses no risk for health problems such as cancer, kidney failure or bone disease.

— Subcommittee on Health Effects of Ingested Fluoride,
National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences (1993)

Effective! more
“Good scientific evidence supports the use of community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride dental products for preventing tooth decay for both children and adults. … Fluoridation of community water has been credited with reducing tooth decay by 50%-60% in the United States since World War II.”

— National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion,
Centers for Disease Control (2005)

Economical! more
“Just fifty cents per person per year covers the cost of fluoridation in an average community. [under 40 cents in Boulder] Over a lifetime, that is the approximate price of one dental filling, making fluoridation very cost effective.”

— American Dental Association (1998)

For Everyone!
“Water fluoridation is a powerful strategy in our efforts to eliminate differences in health among people and is consistent with my emphasis on the importance of prevention. … I join previous Surgeons General in acknowledging the continuing public health role for community water fluoridation in enhancing the oral health of all Americans.”

— Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS,
former Surgeon General of the United States (2004)

  • If fluoridation is discontinued, its benefits can be lost, and there will be an increase in the number of cavities here. Antigo, Wisconsin, began fluoridation in 1949 and ceased it in 1960. Five years later, after up to a doubling of tooth decay in some elementary school children, it was reinstituted.
  • In the United States, 11 states and the District of Columbia (DC) have surpassed 90 percent water fluoridation and another 11 have achieved more than 80 percent fluoridation of communities with a public water supply.
  • Water fluoridation protects more than 300 million people in 40 countries worldwide. In the United States, approximately 162 million people in thousands of communities receive the benefits of optimally fluoridated water, or 66% of the 246 million residents on central water supplies.
  • Forty-four of the 50 largest U.S. cities are fluoridated. Denver has been fluoridated for over 50 years; Boulder for almost 40 years.
  • At least 10 States and territories currently mandate water fluoridation through legislation including California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
  • In Colorado, over 3 million people receive fluoridated water from their communities. Nationally, Colorado ranks 24th in the percentage of population (75%) that drinks fluoridated water.
  • Fluoride is a mineral that occurs in almost all food and water supplies and comes from the element fluorine, the 17th most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It exists only in combination with other elements as a fluoride compound.
  • Fluoride is all-natural and is found in rocks and water. It acts as nature’s cavity-fighter as well as strengthening bones.
  • While fluoride opponents have garnered much publicity in recent years, not one of their claims has ever been proved.

The facts are all on the side of continuing fluoridation.
