CDA Position Statement on Fluoridation

The Colorado Dental Association (CDA) has long supported community water fluoridation as a safe, effective and economical contributor to the dental health of all Coloradans. A dentist in Colorado Springs discovered the decay-preventive properties of fluoride in the early 20th Century. Community water fluoridation began 60 years ago to bring a significant reduction — 20% or more — in dental caries (tooth decay) in the general population.

There are numerous scientific studies about fluoride and community water fluoridation. None have ever found any sound evidence of a health risk being caused or even exacerbated by fluoridation.

The safety, effectiveness and economic benefit of community water fluoridation has led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to label it as one of the “10 great public health achievements of the 20th Century,” a conclusion with which we unreservedly agree.

The CDA is very concerned with Ballot Issue 2B in Boulder. It proposes to immediately stop fluoridation in one of Colorado’s major cities, adversely affecting the health and well-being of 100,000 people or more. Ballot Issue 2B also sets up conditions for the return of fluoridation that can never be met. If it passes, Ballot Issue 2B will forever deny the benefits of fluoridation to Boulder residents.

Proponents claim Ballot Issue 2B will improve the safety of Boulder’s drinking water, supposedly eliminating a source of toxic pollution. This claim is untrue. The fluoridation process used in Boulder is safe, non-toxic and handled by Boulder’s water utility responsibly.

The people of Boulder have no cause for alarm over the quality of their drinking water. The CDA requests the voters of Boulder to consider the health interests of the Boulder community and to vote NO on Ballot Issue 2B.

Don’t Be Deceived!!
Vote no on Issue #2B!

This message is from the Vote No on 2B Committee,
supported by the many very concerned health professionals serving the people of Boulder.
