Vote NO on Ballot Issue #2B!

Deception:  2B is “fluoride neutral”.

Reality:  2B is entirely about banning community water fluoridation, a safe process that provides optimal levels of the naturally-occurring mineral fluoride that protects teeth from decay.

Deception:  2B will make our drinking water safe.

Reality:  Boulder’s city water engineers already do an excellent of assuring that our water is well within safety and health limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Deception:  2B will stop cancer-causing lead and arsenic contamination.

Reality:  Water-treatment plants already control for contamination of all kinds, including lead and arsenic. Boulder’s water is provably safe and there is no reason for concern that it might cause cancer.

Deception:  The fluoride added to Boulder’s water is dangerously contaminated with lead and arsenic.

Reality:  Measurements at the water-treatment plant prove that the anti-decay additive (fluoride) used here adds next to nothing in the way of lead and arsenic at your tap. With less than one drop of fluoride added for every 16 gallons, fluoridation is not contaminating your drinking water in any way!

Deception:  The City can bring back fluoridation if it just meets the requirements in 2B.

Reality:  2B has Catch-22 provisions that prevent the decay-preventive additive from ever being brought back! For instance, it requires that all fluoride additives be approved by the FDA as a drug for “all dosages,” which is a scientific and legal absurdity. Even pure water itself couldn’t get approval under those rules!

Deception:  Community water fluoridation doesn’t really prevent cavities.

Reality:  Oh yes it does. Over 70 years of research show over and over that community water fluoridation is the single most effective way to prevent cavities. Improved nutrition and hygiene and the use of fluoridated toothpaste over the decades has also helped, but cannot match fluoridation for safety, efficacy and low-cost.

Deception:  2B has the health and well-being of Boulderites at heart.

Reality:  2B would cause great pain and suffering! Studies show that without fluoridation, there would be a 25% or more increase in cavities community-wide, with most of those showing up in children, seniors, and the poor. This means an extra visit to the dentist for some 1/3 of Boulder residents each year! Tooth decay hurts — and it negatively affects everyone’s general health, too. People living longer lives need healthy teeth to last them all their days.

Deception:  Removing fluoridation will save taxpayers money.

Reality:  The increase in cavities caused by passing 2B could cost Boulder families and taxpayers from $4 to $8 million per year for extra trips to the dentist. Compare that with the $36,000 annual cost of fluoridation.

Deception:  Fluoridation is a conspiracy by the aluminum and fertilizer industries to dump their toxic wastes on us.

Reality:  If it’s a conspiracy, it has taken in the entire scientific/health community in Boulder, which supports the city’s water fluoridation program and opposes 2B! It’s unanimous among reputable scientists and licensed health-care providers here: water fluoridation is a needed public-health measure, and it harms no one!
